Tasmanian Certificate of Education Update

The Tasmanian Government is committed to ensuring the safety, health and wellbeing of all Tasmanian students, and ensuring that no student is disadvantaged by COVID-19.

We know the senior secondary years are a critical time for students, and many of those in Years 11 and 12 will be feeling uncertain during this difficult time.

The Tasmanian Certificate of Education

  • I want to reassure senior secondary students and their families that if you meet the standards of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), you will achieve it, with the knowledge that your senior secondary certificate is meaningful and comparable with those students who finished Year 12 in 2019 both in Tasmania, as well as across Australia.
  • We will provide students yet to achieve the Everyday Adult Standards in Reading, Writing and Communication in English, Mathematics and Use of the Computers and the Internet with opportunities to meet them later this year using online safety net tests for these three standards.
  • Students studying all TASC courses (Preliminary Level – Level 4) will at this stage undertake assessment tasks as developed and provided by their teachers with support from schools and teachers.

External assessment (including exams)

  • I can confirm that at this stage TASC external assessments will proceed for Level 3 and Level 4 courses.

Practical courses

  • Investigations are underway regarding the assessment of practical courses such as Drama, Dance, Music and Outdoor Leadership, as well as community engagement or workplace requirements, and TASC will provide advice as soon as is practicable.

University entrance and post-school opportunities

  • TASC continues to work closely with the Department of Education and the University of Tasmania to ensure that no student is locked out of post-school opportunities as a result of decisions regarding COVID-19.
  • I am mindful of the current uncertainty, but will ensure that students are not negatively impacted as a result of the pandemic.
  • Senior secondary authorities across Australia have agreed to adopt processes to ensure that students are not disadvantaged.

I would again like to thank all students, families and teachers for their support during this period, my ongoing commitment is to ensure we work together through the challenges presented and ensure student achievements are recognised.
